See you in Santiago! > Way of St. James
Way of St. James
Way of Sant James currently remains among the most impressive historical, cultural, artistic and spiritual display and was declared the first European Cultural Route by the Council of Europe in 1987. The routes leading to Santiago are busier than ever with pilgrims from all over the world, resulting in a fusion of languages, customs and a continual cultural exchange in Santiago. Walking to Santiago has evolved into a way of life and sightseeing: motivated either by religious reasons or by many others which transform this ancient pilgrimage route into one of the most attractive options for leisure, culture or personal growth.
Notwithstanding the history and cult of St James, there are also the Jubilee year celebrations when plenary indulgences are granted, and which also situates Santiago among one of three Christian holy cities alongside Rome and Jerusalem. The next Jubilee years will be 2010 and 2021, when the city will again amply showcase its impressive draw as an international focal point.
